full-scale war broke out between Iraq and Iran.  It would turn out to be the longest war of the twentieth century and left half a million dead. At times the fighting appeared horribly like that on the Western Front during World War One.   The cease-fire on 20 August 1988 brought neither a change in borders nor reparations.
