On this day in 1945

the United Nations was formally established with the ratification of the UN Charter.  These days, criticising the UN  is pretty much de rigeur for a range of people on all sides of the political spectrum.  Either the organisation is weak and toothless, a failed idealistic experiment or it’s a front for a forthcoming sinister world government.  Oh, there have been failures in plenty and successes too – more than could ever be described or even listed in one post.  The most recent of these is the failure to make any impression on the carnage happening in Syria.  The problem of course is that the UN has no authority to play world policeman and still suffers from being viewed as the publicity wing of US foreign policy. m

I do wonder however if the UN’s biggest detractors fail to notice it’s greatest achievement – that with financial, economic and political problems crowding in from every direction it provides a place where as a planet we can keep talking.
